UNG basketball: Burson nabs 500th win against Flagler

By AccessWDUN Staff

DAHLONEGA - Buffie Burson knows how to win and her record is proof.

With a 68-63 win over Flagler Monday, the University of North Georgia women's basketball coach scored her 500th-career victory making her just the 11th active NCAA Division II coach to reach the coaching milestone

The win didn't come easy as North Georgia trailed by as many as 10 in the final period, but an unsportsmanlike foul on a Saint with just under seven minutes to play changed the momentum as UNG scored 12 of the next 16 points to cut the Flagler lead to two with 2:47 left.

After a Tabitha Odabe layup put Flagler up four, Julianne Sutton and Tamera Thorpe hit back-to-back layups to tie the game at 62. From there, North Georgia hit four free throws down the stretch to ice the game away, earning the Peach Belt win at home.

NOTES

Burson has been the coach of the North Georgia women's basketball program for 25 years and has had all 500 wins in her career as coach at UNG.

Amber Skidgel led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Vanessa Agrusa's 15 points. Abbie Franklin had 14, while Sutton added 10. Agrusa also added 10 rebounds, notching her first double-double of the season.

The Nighthawks assisted on 15 of the 23 made baskets in the contest.

North Georgia will take on Augusta Wednesday afternoon in Dahlonega, with the start time scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
