Toccoa woman airlifted for care after wreck with dump truck

TOCCOA – Two Stephens County women were injured when their vehicle was struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Ga. 17 and Ga. 106 near Toccoa on Thursday.

Emily Baggett of Toccoa was driving a Mazda 6 northbound on Ga. 106 (Mize Road) approaching Ga. 17 (Toccoa Bypass), according to Trooper Vance W. Henry Jr., of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

“Driver and witness statements indicate the Ga. 17 traffic had the green light and Mize Road traffic had a red light,” Henry said. “A witness traveling beside the dump truck saw the Mazda sedan driven by Ms. Baggett approaching the intersection and [it] did not appear to be slowing down. The sedan entered the intersection and was struck by the dump truck on the driver side. After the collision, the dump truck let the roadway, crashing through the guardrail, rolling onto its side as it went down the embankment. The sedan also struck the guardrail but remained on the edge of the bank.”

The dump truck, owned by Powell’s Trucking of Toccoa, was driven by Mylon B. Shedd of Martin, Henry said. He was not hurt but was transported to Stephens County Hospital for evaluation.

Baggett was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. She was transported to Stephens County Hospital, then was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

“Ms. Baggett was the most seriously injured with trauma to her head,” Henry said.

Baggett’s passenger, Catherine V. Holt of Toccoa, had complaints of hip and back pain and difficulty breathing, according to Henry. She was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

As of Friday, Henry had no updates on the medical conditions of those involved in the wreck.

The wreck remains under investigation.
