AMD to build fulfillment center in Gateway Industrial Centre

By B.J. Williams
While the announcement about the new inland terminal in Hall County for the Georgia Ports Authority got most of the attention Monday, Gov. Nathan Deal also told local business leaders about plans for another new business in the area.

Auto Metal Direct - also known as AMD - will build a fulfillment center in Hall County's Gateway Industrial Centre off Ga. 365 in the eastern part of Hall County.

AMD is a worldwide distributor of auto body panels and trim for classic cars and trucks.

"They're going to build a 318,000 square-foot building for purposes of a fulfillment center. Now, that's a $15 million investment that will employ about 40 people when they finish it in the fall of next year," Deal said Monday. "I am told that this company is one of the largest - if not the largest - producers of fabricated metal parts for antique automobiles."

Deal said AMD will build its facility directly across the street from the new inland terminal.

"Hundreds of containers each year are received by AMD, so the services provided by the Georgia Ports Authority are essential for the maintenance and growth of our business,” said AMD President Mark Headrick in a press statement released after the announcement. “The proximity of the new inland port will be a real plus in many areas, and was an influencing factor in the eventual location of our building. Quicker service, lower cost and ease of movement should all be realized in our new location.”

Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson said AMD's announcement in conjunction with the inland terminal announcement was another sign that the Georgia Ports Authority is working to build business across the state.

"The expansion of AMD is a testament to their efforts and will further bolster the strength of the workforce in this community. Congratulations to all of the partners involved - this new Northeast Georgia Inland Port will create exciting opportunities for this community and region," Wilson said.

The new 104-acre Northeast Georgia Inland Port will be located in the Gateway Industrial Centre off Ga. 365. The new terminal's services will draw from the 1.5-million population in Hall, Gwinnett and surrounding counties, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.
