Sears plans to sell Gainesville store and hundreds of other Sears, Kmart stores

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

The Sears store in Gainesville is one of 504 Sears and Kmart stores Sears Holding Corp. plans to sell.

The list of stores that are being sold was made public Thursday.  The Gainesville store is the only one in Georgia, Sears or Kmart, on the list.

According to the Chicago Tribune and several other news outlets, Sears, which filed for bankruptcy in October and has closed hundreds of stores over the past few years, got permission earlier this month from a federal bankruptcy judge to sell some of its remaining stores.  Sears Holding Corp. is headquartered in Chicago.

"Our goal is to emerge as a member-centric company, reorganized around a smaller platform of profitable stores, with the capital needed to allow us to prosper in the future," according to a company news release.

It apparently will be several weeks, at the earliest, before the sale of any of the stores is finalized.  The company is hoping the new owners will continue to operate the stores.
