Transportation officials say that the week of Thanksgiving will be another busy one on roads and airlines in Georgia and across the country.
Garrett Townsend, a spokesman for the travel agency AAA, says more than 54 million people will be traveling on roads between Wednesday, November 21 and Sunday, November 25. He said more than one million of those will be in Georgia.
"Thanksgiving is huge, it's a time where family and friends look to get together," Townsend said. "In fact, for 2018 holiday weekend, we're seeing this is the highest Thanksgiving volume in more than a dozen years, in fact since 2005."
He said that officials are also expecting around a five percent increase in air travel as well, which he said will likely have a direct impact on Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Townsend said that the best plan to avoid being stuck in airport lines and traffic jams is to leave as soon as possible.
"AAA encourages motorists to leave plenty of time to reach their destination," Townsend said. "And then, of course, we always recommend minimizing any distractions behind the wheel so that you can get to your destination safely."
