Friends raise money for teen critically injured in Halloween night accident

By B.J. Williams

Even though a 16-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition following a freak accident at a Halloween night festival in Oakwood, his family remains hopeful that he'll make a recovery.

According to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Jacob Stevens, the teen was attending the Trunks of Treats event at Cornerstone Assembly Church of God on Atlanta Highway when he was injured by a pumpkin slingshot that misfired. Instead of firing the pumpkin into the woods, the slingshot did not release the pumpkin and instead it hit Stevens.

"After being hit in the chest with a pumpkin, his heart stopped and his lungs were injured from stomach acid," the story on the fundraising site reads.

The latest update from the teen's brother said that Jacob remains on a ventilator and is resting and healing. The teen has been able to make simple communication with family members.

Friends of the Stevens family are hoping to raise $20,000, since Jacob's parents are missing work to stay with their son at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Oakwood police who responded to the scene said the incident was "a terrible accident" and that everyone at the church was cooperative with their investigation.
