The Flowery Branch City Council approved a "pocket park" for the city's downtown area at its meeting Thursday night.
The park will feature walking trails winding through around a half-acre of land on the southwest corner of the Lights Ferry Road roundabout and is expect to cost just over $85,000 to build.
"This park is kind of seen as a way of helping people eventually walk from downtown to Lake Lanier," City Manager Bill Andrew said.
It is one of two pocket parks the city is pursuing. Andrew said the city has purchased a half-acre of land at the corner of Mitchell Street and Pine Street near city hall and will pursue the development of another park there. In May, the city installed a "parklet" on Main Street.
"We had bought quite a bit of right-of-way for that roundabout to be put in, so we had excess right-of-way that we felt we could get better use out of," Andrew said. "There's actually another little quarter of that area that probably could be developed, so it's just a resource that we had and wouldn't cost a lot to make it into something that's more useful."
The city council approved the new park unanimously.
