Jefferson closes out regular season with win over rival Panthers

JEFFERSON — Jefferson used a 21-point second quarter to blow open a close en route to a 38-3 win over rival Jackson County Friday night in Region 8-3A action at Panthers Stadium.

It was the season finale for the Dragons (8-2, 5-1 Region 8-3A) who will have a bye week next week and two weeks to rest and get ready for the playoffs. Jefferson already has clinched the No. 2 seed from Region 8-3A.

The two teams traded turnovers early on before Donsha Gaither gave Jefferson a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run.

The Dragons exploded in the second quarter.

Zac Corbin made it 14-0 on an 18-yard scoring run and then freshman 
Carter Stephenson tossed a 45-yard TD pass to Garmon Randolph. Corbin closed out the first half with a 61-yard romp for a 28-0 halftime lead.

The teams traded field goals in the third quarter as Jackson County’s Ayden Griswold booted a 34-yard field goal, which was set up by a 58-yard run from Bo Reeves.

On the next drive, Jefferson’s Hayden Kilgore connected on a 28-yard field goal to push the Dragons’ lead to 31-3. Stephenson finished the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run midway though the fourth quarter.

Corbin finished with 88 yards rushing and 65 yards reciving while Stephenson had 82 yards rushing and 127 yards passing for the game.
