By AccessWDUN Staff

JEFFERSON — Jasper Gibson caught fire and his Jefferson boys basketball team stayed just hot enough to fend off Stephens County 75-72 on Monday in region play in Jefferson.

Gibson scored 41 points -- including 23 in the first quarter, as the Dragons (14-7, 5-1 Region 8-AAAA) built a 50-27 halftime advantage.

Despite the stunning start, however, the Indians (14-8, 2-5) recovered and charged back into the contest after the interval, even taking the lead on two occasions in the second half. Yet, Jefferson responded in time to notch its 12th win in its last 14 contests. Gibson was the only Dragon to put up double-digit scoring.

Deundra Singleton scored 29 points to pace Stephens County, while Ty Nails added 11.

Jefferson plays again at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against North Oconee in Jefferson.
