Cornelia officials investigating Monday night residential fire

CORNELIA — Cornelia Fire Department investigators are continuing to probe the cause of the fire that destroyed a mobile home near Cornelia Elementary School Monday night.

The home, located on Old Cleveland Road at Escort Way, was destroyed as a result of the fire.

“We were initially dispatched at 10:07 p.m., and we were on scene at 10:12,” said Cornelia Fire Chief Chad Dyer. “Upon our first arriving unit, it was approximately 75 to 85 percent involved.”

Firefighters were able to secure water from a nearby hydrant, resulting in the closure of Old Cleveland Road from North Main Street to Wood Street for an extended time.

Cornelia firefighters attempted to extinguish the fire with crews both inside and outside the structure.

“We had a knockdown relatively quickly, but remained on scene for two hours and 22 minutes,” Dyer said.

Eleven personnel from Cornelia Fire Department responded, and a team from Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department assisted with extinguishing the fire.

“Habersham County EMS was on scene also, and evaluated one adult that had initially been in the residence for possible smoke inhalation,” Dyer said.

That individual was not transported for treatment.

The fire displaced two adults and two small children.

“Right now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation” by Cornelia Fire Department personnel, Dyer said.

Smoke from the fire, visible from several miles away, also activated the fire alarm at nearby Cornelia Elementary School. A school resource officer from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and a member of Habersham County School System Maintenance Department responded to ensure there were no problems inside that building.

Cornelia police provided traffic control during the period of the road closure.
