GSP identifies child who was run over near Clarkesville late last week

CLARKESVILLE — The Georgia State Patrol has released the identity of the child seriously injured when she was run over in a yard near Clarkesville Thursday afternoon.

Layla Barrett Thomas, 2, was playing in the yard off Bob Patton Road when she traveled in front of a black 1997 Jeep Wrangler driven by Timothy Joseph Barrett, 30, of Clarkesville, according to the GSP accident report.

The Jeep was traveling south on a private driveway when the child traveled in front of it and Barrett did not see her. The Jeep struck the child with its undercarriage.

Layla Barrett Thomas was flown by AirLife Georgia 2 to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with incapacitating upper extremity injuries, according to the report.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the accident, and the report states Barrett was not distracted at the time.

No charges are anticipated, according to GSP.

A GoFundMe account has been established for Layla and her family at https://www.gofundme.com/sweet-baby-layla with a goal of raising $10,000 to help with expenses during this difficult time..
