5 northeast Georgia governments awarded loans for water, sewer work

The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority board of directors Tuesday granted a total of nearly $13 million in loans for water and sewer projects in 5 northeast Georgia communities.

The city of Commerce dollar total is the highest at $7.48 million.  $5.35 million will go toward construction of a facility to pretreat the waste stream from Diana Foods prior to entering the city’s sewer collection system, according to the authority.  The remaining $2.13 million is for a project to extend water and sewer service to serve the Banks County Industrial Park.

Pickens County is planning to build a water treatment facility with its $2.6 million loan.

"This project will give the community of Grandview Lake, the Salvation Army, and residents in unincorporated Pickens County access to a public water system and provide adequate fire protection," a news release from the authority stated.

The city of Royston received $2 million to finance rehabilitation of an existing sewer plant.  The work is expected to ensure the facility meets future regulatory requirements.

In Dawsonville, nearly 1,200 automated reading water meters and several backflow preventers will be financed with $569,000

The city of Hoschton will use a $315,000 loan to address the city's aging sewer system with gravity sewer lines and demolition of a failing pump station.

Across Georgia, the authority board awarded financing totaling $48.44 million this week.
