Firefighters save family pet, house in Barrow County fire

Barrow County firefighters rescued and resuscitated a family cat in a house fire that displaced 2 adults and 3 children Sunday afternoon.

Crews responded to the fire at roughly 5:20 p.m. on Scott Drive off of Matthews School Road in the Winder area, according to fire officials.

"Upon arrival our crews found a single story residence with smoke showing through the front door and back windows. All residents were out of the house," Captain Scott Dakin said in a media release.  "We entered the structure, began an interior attack, and were able to quickly extinguish the bulk of the fire."

Officials credit a thermal imaging camera with helping crews locate the fire in a back bedroom.

Firefighters also rescued a cat from the house and revived it with oxygen given through a mask specifically designed for cats and dogs.  The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents.

Crews contained the fire to the bedroom, but about half of the house sustained smoke, heat and water damage.  Fire investigators ruled the blaze accidental.
