Fire causes heavy damage to Auburn home during thunderstorms

As thunderstorms moved through Barrow County Sunday night, firefighters were busy answering calls, including a fire that did heavy damage to an Auburn area home.

County firefighters responded around 7:30 p.m. to Meadow Trace Drive off of Wages Road to a report from a resident indicating lightning had struck a house three times.

"Upon arrival our crews found a two-story residence with heavy fire showing through the roof and black, turbulent smoke coming from the attic gable vents," Capt. Aaron Fuller said in a media release.  "All residents were out of the house, so a handline was stretched to the front door to begin an interior attack."

Firefighters used both interior and exterior efforts to put the fire out.  They also rescued a cat from inside the home.

"Approximately 30 percent of the roof was destroyed and much of the house received heavy damage from smoke, heat and water,"  Barrow County Emergency Services Assistant Public Information Officer Steve Rose wrote in the release.

The American Red Cross is assisting two adults displaced by the blaze.

The call came as crews were leaving a house that had been struck by lightning off of Harmony Grove Church Road.  No fire was found at the home roughly 3 miles from the Meadow Trace Drive call.
