South Carolina swimming accident claims life of Gainesville man

By B.J. Williams

A Gainesville man died early Sunday morning after a swimming-related accident in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department, in a post made to social media shortly after the victim's death, said they were called to the area of 24th Avenue North in response to a distressed swimmer.

"The male, 35 years of age...was in the ocean, approximately knee deep, with a young family member when a wave crashed over him," the post explained.

Police said a lifeguard with John's Beach Service, who had apparently arrived to the beach early to start his patrol shift, rescued the man from the water with the help of a family member and brought the victim onto the beach.

"The lifeguard, an off-duty EMT, and a police officer performed CPR on the male," the post continued. "EMS transported the male to the hospital where he died as a result of this incident."

It is unknown at this time exactly what injuries the man suffered that led to his death.

The investigation is ongoing.
