ATLANTA — Gainesville's Spencer Ralston fired a blistering 7-under par 63 Tuesday at Capital City Club-Crabapple in the first round of a U.S. Amateur Open qualifier.

Ralston, a University of Georgia standout, posted eight birdies to go with just one bogey. He led Luke Schniederjans and Hunter Fry by just one stroke heading into Wednesday's second and final round of qualifying.

Current Gainesville High standout Ryan Hogan shot a 3-over 73 in the first round to stay alive.

Buford's Jordan Rodriguez and Dawsonville's Andrew Hughes both carded 74 but missed the cut by a stroke. Former Lakeview Academy standout John Jacobs shot an 80 and failed to advance.
