Dawson County: Motorcyclist killed during chase by state trooper

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Authorities confirmed Saturday morning that the fatal accident in Dawson County Friday afternoon occurred during the chase of a motorcyclist by a state trooper.

It happened about 2:00 on Georgia 400 near the Dawson-Lumpkin County line.

"A Post 37 Cumming Trooper tried to stop a 2006 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle for speeding on SR 400 near the Dawson/Lumpkin County Line," State Patrol spokesman Curtis Bradshaw wrote in an email.  "The motorcycle fled from the Trooper while traveling south on SR 400.  As the driver of the motorcycle fled from the Trooper at a high rate of speed, he was weaving in and out of traffic and struck the left front corner of a 2014 Hyundai Sonata that was entering the SR 400 southbound lanes from Dawson 400 Circle."

Bradshaw says the motorcycle overturned and traveled into the median where it struck a highway sign support, broke into several pieces, and caught fire.

He adds the motorcyclist died at the scene.  The occupants of the car that the bike struck were not injured.

The driver of the motorcyclist has been identified, but the next of kin has not been notified at this time, according to Bradshaw, who added that the motorcycle did not have a tag and was not insured at the time of the crash.

"One northbound lane and one southbound lane of SR 400 was closed due to the crash and investigation from about 1400 hours (2:00) until about 1845 hours (6:45),"  Bradshaw said.
