PHOTOS: Officials, future students cut the ribbon on Mundy Mill Academy

Hundreds turned out Tuesday morning to see the new school building and ribbon cutting at the new Mundy Mill Academy.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Wanda Creel started the ceremony by thanking everyone who was there and who made the school possible. Then, she and Mundy Mill Academy principal Dr. Crystal Brown cut the ribbon alongside officials and over a dozen future Mundy Mill Academy students

"It's so exciting. I've been a principal for several years already but I've never had the opportunity to open up a school, so this is a unique opportunity for me and I am thrilled," said Brown.

Brown said a brand new school needs a plan.

"The first goal is getting everybody on the same page. We have staff members from all of the different schools so we need to make sure we are unified in our approach to things. So my goal is that the first day of school doesn't look like the first day of school. I want it to look like we are smooth sailing," said Brown. "From that point we're going to see where everybody is academically, make sure they have the right training and prepare a great education for our boys and girls."

The school is located in the Mundy Mill subdivision on the south side of Gainesville.
