GHS recognizes college-bound seniors

Gainesville High School celebrated Decision Day Friday at the school.

The event recognized those members of the Class of 2017, more than 100 of them, who have committed to a college or university to further their education.

The goal of Decision Day, according to school officials, is to not only recognize high school seniors for their postsecondary educational plans but to also encourage younger students to prepare early for a post-secondary education.

College Decision Day is inspired by the NCAA's National Signing Day for athletes and former First Lady Michelle Obama's "Reach Higher" initiative.

“Gainesville City School System is so proud to celebrate with our students as they have made the decision to pursue the next level of education,”  said Dr. Wanda Creel, Superintendent of Schools. “When you are accepted to several schools, the decision on which school is the perfect fit to pursue your career interest is a tough decision that many of our Seniors had to make.  We also recognize that we have seniors that are still finalizing their plans.   We look forward to learning about their decisions and congratulating them on their future endeavors."

“Some GHS students are still weighing options about which school will shape the next four years of their life, but we wanted to acknowledge with pride those students who have made the decision for their future,” added Adrian Cromwell, GHS Assistant Principal and event organizer.  “While some of our students will embark on schools nationwide such as University of Southern California, Furman, University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama, Wingate University, William Penn University and more, many of our graduates have chosen to span the state in their college choices by selecting Georgia Tech, Mercer University, Brenau, University of Georgia, Young Harris College, Valdosta State,  University of North Georgia, Lanier Technical College,  and more.”

“It is our desire to celebrate individual academic achievements of our Seniors to the school as a whole, while emphasizing the significance of preparing for life after high school,” said Misty Freeman, Director of College and Career Readiness.
