Vehicle strikes, kills pedestrian in Stephens County

TOCCOA — A Toccoa woman died after being struck by a car on Red Rock Road in Stephens County Monday night.

The wreck happened about 11:55 p.m. May 1 on Red Rock Road, 100 feet north of 938 Red Rock Road, and claimed the life of Hannah Brianne McFall, 18, according to Trooper 1st Class Brady Galloway of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

McFall had walked out from her residence on Red Rock Road and started walking down the road when she was struck by a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 driven by Jonathan Purcell, 32, of Toccoa, that was traveling north on Red Rock Road, Galloway said. [See editor's note]

“[Purcell] supposedly didn’t know what he had hit,” Galloway said. “He left the scene, then turned himself in a short time later.”

Galloway said no charges have been filed against Purcell at this point, and the investigations by GSP and the Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) are ongoing.

McFall died instantly on impact, Galloway said, adding alcohol and drugs are not suspected on the part of either person involved.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A subsequent report from the Georgia State Patrol indicated McFall was lying in the road at the time she was struck. The report also indicated the time of the accident was unknown. AccessWDUN has asked for the report from the SCRT officers, but as of Friday, May 12 that report was not made available. Autopsy results for the victim are pending. This story will be updated as reports are provided.
