Wreck that killed Gainesville woman remains under investigation

Authorities in Forsyth County Wednesday continued to investigate a two-vehicle traffic accident that claimed the life of a Gainesville woman early Tuesday evening.

The crash happened around 6:12 p.m. on Georgia 9/Dahlonega Highway at Mountain Road, according to Deputy First Class Doug Rainwater.

Alicia Velazquez, 24, was a front seat passenger in one of the vehicles involved.  The driver of the car, Josue Gomez of Sugar Hill, was allegedly the at-fault driver.

"According to the investigation, a 2004 Ford F-150, operated by Oscar Garcia of Cumming, was traveling south on Dahlonega Highway approaching Mountain Road," Rainwater wrote in a news release.  "The Volkswagen Passat, operated by Mr. Gomez, was traveling north on Dahlonega Highway and failed to yield and turned left towards Mountain Road, into the path of the Ford F-150."

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to North Fulton Hospital with what Rainwater described as non-life threatening injuries.  Velazquez was pronounced dead at Northside Forsyth Hospital.  There were no other passengers in either vehicle, according to Rainwater.

"Once we determine if there is a citation that needs to be written, or a charge that needs to be placed, we will take care of that," Rainwater said.

For now, Rainwater said investigators don't know why Gomez allegedly failed to yield.
