Sheriff: Teenage student faces charges in hoax shooter threat

Charges have been filed against a 16 year old female that allegedly called in a hoax gunman threat at a Jackson County high school.

The teen has been charged with disrupting a public school, transmitting a false public alarm, unlawful conduct during a 911 call and false report of a crime, according to Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum.

Around 7:40 a.m., Mangum said a call came in to Jackson County 911 that an intruder had entered one of the county schools with a gun. Deputies were dispatched to both Jackson County High School and East Jackson High School.

"The school was cleared, the children were safe, we found nobody and determined through further investigation it was a hoax call. We were later able to determine who made the call, which was a 16 year old juvenile," said Mangum.

Mangum says they will not be releasing the juvenile's name. The juvenile attended East Jackson High School and has been released to a legal guardian, Mangum said.

"It's our main priority to get to that school and stop that threat to make sure our children and school personnel are safe. And that's exactly what we did," said Mangum.

Jefferson Police, Commerce Police, Braselton Police, Arcade Police, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigations, and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division assisted the investigation.
