Construction to start Wednesday on pedestrian projects at five Gainesville intersections

Construction is set to begin Wednesday at five intersections along the "moat" of Downtown Gainesville, officials announced Monday.

The project aims to provide safer routes for pedestrians and better connectivity in the area, according to Angela Sheppard, assistant city manager.

The intersections are along E.E. Butler Parkway — at its intersections with Washington and Spring Streets — and Jesse Jewell Parkway — at its intersections with Bradford, Main and West Academy Streets.

Officials anticipate one lane will be closed in each direction during the work, which will happen on weeknights between 8:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

"The project will include the installation of decorative thermoplastic material, mimicking brick pavers, on the crosswalks," said Sheppard in a statement.

"More than 70,000 vehicle trips are recorded on these intersections daily. These improvements were identified as a short term, cost effective approach in our Downtown Strategic Plan."
