PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The men's golf team had their best performance of the year on the second day of the Skyhawk Invitational. They shot a team 305 to move up four spots in the tournament, to finish in a tie for sixth with fellow conference member Tennessee Wesleyan in the 15-team tournament.

Freshman Matt Smith led the team with a 77-76, which tied him for 15th in a 92 player field. Fellow freshman Duncan Taylor had the low score of the day with a 75, and finished in a tie for 22nd. Another freshman, Dawson Day, playing as an individual, also shot a 76 on day two. Senior Drew Schmidt shot a 76 on day two for the team, and sophomore David Ford shot a 76 playing as an individual.

Rounding out the team score on day two was another freshman, Luke Peavy, with a 78. Sophomore Kyle Lairsey also contributed a 78 on day one to contribute to the team success. The scores of 75-76-76-76-76-78 turned in by the Bears on day two show how bright the future is with four of those coming from freshmen, one sophomore and one senior.

The teams ahead of TMU were three nationally ranked teams, and they finished in a tie with Tennessee Wesleyan who is also receiving votes in the national rankings.

"This was an outstanding tournament for the men's team," said head coach Steve Patton, "and it shows how hard they have been working to peak at the right time for the conference championship."

The Bears will next play in the Golden Tiger Invitational, hosted by Brenau University, at Chattahoochee Golf Club.
