Piedmont bullpen freezes out Stevens in 5-4 win at Loudermilk

By AccessWDUN Staff

DEMOREST — On a chilly evening in northeast Georgia, the Piedmont College baseball team held off visiting Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-4, on Tuesday at Loudermilk Field in Demorest.

Stevens raced out to a 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the top of the 1st though the Lions got one back in the bottom of the 2nd to cut the lead to two.

Piedmont would turn the tide in the 6th getting three runs, two of which came on bases loaded walk situations. After the home team went up 4-3 in the 6th, a wild pitch in the 7th allowed the Ducks to even it back up at four each with the two teams headed to the stretch.

However, Tyler Burdette belted an RBI double in the home half of the inning to push Piedmont back in front 5-4 with the Lions bullpen doing the work needed to ice the contest from there.

Back-to-back quiet innings for relievers Matt Vonderschmidt and Buddy Green capped a strong performance from the pen with Michael Henderson getting the win in relief.

Piedmont next faces an important three-game set in conference play this coming weekend traveling to face Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala.
