Hart County wreck claims life of Elberton man

An Elberton man died and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Hart County Monday morning.

William Craig Phillips, 36, of Elberton was driving a silver Chevrolet Sprint north on Ga. 77 (Elberton Highway) when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and struck a Ford Fusion head-on, said Cpl. Matt Baxley of Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell. The wreck was reported at 7:44 a.m. on Ga. 77 at Liberty Hill Road.

The Ford was driven by Christa Beard, 26, of Union City. Beard and her two adult passengers all suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to AnMed in South Carolina for treatment, Baxley said. All three were restrained.

Phillips, who was not restrained, died as a result of his injuries Baxley said.
