Sugar Hill mulls ordinance update to allow 'BYOB' at city events

The Sugar Hill City Council is considering an update to its alcohol ordinance that would allow attendees of city events to bring their own alcohol from home.

"The ordinance would allow the city council to create -- for lack of a better word -- special 'red zone' events on an annual basis for the possession and consumption of alcohol, primarily in our downtown footprint," said Paul Radford, city manager, in a phone interview.

As it stands currently, event planners have to obtain a special permit to allow for alcohol to be purchased or consumed on sites such as The Bowl.

"It's also in anticipation of us on-boarding in early '18 our new $40-million mixed-use development that will have a plaza overlooking that bowl that will have a number of restaurants that will have alcohol licenses," said Radford.

But, alcohol wouldn't necessarily have to be purchased from a restaurant or vendor at the various rock concerts and festivals under the new plan. Patrons, under the ordinance, would also be allowed to bring booze from home, so long as it isn't in a glass container.

Council will give the matter a vote on Monday.
