In a stark contrast to weather the region has experienced in recent days, the National Weather Service is calling for the possibility of snow in 8 northeast Georgia counties this weekend.
The service in Peachtree City issued a winter weather advisory for Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Dawson, Lumpkin and White counties. The advisory begins at 9:00 p.m. Saturday and continues through 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
Rabun County is under an advisory from the weather service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina that runs from 7:00 p.m. Saturday until 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
Forecasters predicted snowfall amounts of an inch or less with more possible at higher elevations. The Greenville-Spartanburg generated advisory generally called for higher slightly snowfall amounts.
"With temperatures hovering around freezing across the advisory area, spotty areas of slick roads are expected by late this (Saturday) evening through early Sunday morning," the advisory stated.
The timing of the event is expected to start with a rain/snow mix as early as mid-evening in higher elevations. Forecasters called for snowfall to move to lower elevations after midnight and end by mid-morning Sunday.
The predicted snowfall line is generally north of a line from LaFayette to Dawsonville to Cleveland, according to the weather service.
Temperatures Sunday across the advisory area are expected to be in the low to mid 40s.
