Principal for new Mundy Mill Academy moves ahead with hiring for new school year

By B.J. Williams
As work progresses on the new Mundy Mill Academy in Gainesville, the staffing for the new school is almost complete.

Dr. Crystal Brown is the principal for Gainesville's newest elementary school, and according to a report at Monday night's Gainesville School Board work session, Brown has been spending a great deal of time interviewing teachers for the new school. In fact, she conducted 53 interviews in just two weeks.

Out of those interviews, she has about 15 classroom teachers ready to make the transfer from other schools in the Gainesville district to Mundy Mill Academy.

"I was so impressed with the caliber of candidates that we had," Brown said after the work session. "It was very difficult to choose which ones would be coming over."

Brown said it may be necessary to hire more teachers because the school system is unsure right now just how many students will enroll at Mundy Mill. The new school, located on the south side of the city, will open for the 2017-18 school year in August.

Brown said apart from classroom teachers, she has about four staff positions to fill.
