Softball goes undefeated at Piedmont Classic with pair of wins Sunday

DEMOREST — The Piedmont College softball team completed a perfect weekend at Walker Athletic Complex with a pair of wins Sunday over Emory & Henry and Millsaps. Piedmont picked up a 1-0 victory over the Wasps behind Melissa Eckman's shutout while a come-from-behind seventh inning rally lifted the Lady Lions to a 2-1 win over the Majors.

It was a quiet game in the opener for the day as Piedmont scored in the top of the third after a leadoff walk was issued to Audrey Esakoff. Haley McCurry moved her into scoring position with a sac bunt then Haley Hixon grounded out to the pitcher putting Esakoff on third. When Allyson Gentry drew a walk as well, head coach Terry Martin's baserunning techniques led Gentry to get tagged out between first and second but allowed Esakoff to score before the tag plating the game winning run.

Eckman tossed a gem in game one with the win giving up six hits and no runs while striking out six batters.

In game two, it was Millsaps that got ahead early and looked to be taking a 1-0 victory back to Jackson, Mississippi but Piedmont rallied late to claim the win. The Majors scored in the top of the second to lead 1-0, but Piedmont clawed back with their backs against the wall in the bottom of the seventh.

McCurry led off the inning with a single, followed by fellow Haley, Hixon bunting her over to second on the sacrifice. Gentry singled to put runners on the corners then Hannah Hoban singled to load the bases. Jessica Bagwell drove in the tying run, and with the winning run on third, Josie Coker flied out to center field to drive in Gentry and send the Lady Lions onto the diamond to celebrate.
