Sugar Hill approves annexation of Cumming Highway property for future park

A new park is one step closer to reality in Sugar Hill, with council members approving the annexation of the 22 acres of land along Cumming Highway.

The parcel of land sits near Sugar Ridge Drive, and will likely be used for a "passive park," according to Paul Radford, city manager.

A passive park generally includes things like walking trails, children's playgrounds and picnic areas. They do not include fields for active sports like baseball or football.

"It may have something like disc golf on it," said Radford. "We plan on having several community meetings to get (the public's) input, but clearly city council bought it as green space."

The city purchased the property, which is about halfway between the Chattahoochee River and Downtown Sugar Hill, in 2016.

"We thought it would be a nice 22 acres to have as a passive park, similar to one Suwanee has on Suwanee Dam Road called Sims Lake Park," said Radford.

City council members approved the motion at their meeting Monday evening.

In January, council approved a separate annexation request for a park, which will be a part of the Sugar Loop Greenway.
