Hiawassee man arrested after brief chase in Towns County

A Hiawassee man faces nearly a half-dozen charges following a short vehicle chase over the weekend.

Albert Lee Shelton, 54, was arrested Saturday morning after the pursuit and a subsequent manhunt, Towns County Sheriff Chris Clinton announced Monday.

A Towns County deputy sheriff attempted to stop a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac on Ga. 288. The vehicle failed to stop for the deputy, turning from Ga. 288 onto Twin Mountain Road, Clinton said.

At the end of Twin Mountain Road, the driver fled on foot from the truck and ran into nearby woods.

Sheriff's deputies set up a perimeter and tracking dogs were called.

Union County Sheriff's Office K-9 Officer Lacey, a bloodhound, located Shelton a short distance from the vehicle, where he was arrested.

Shelton is charged with driving on suspended license, obstruction of an officer, driving with no insurance, fleeing and attempting to elude, and suspended vehicle registration, according to Clinton.

Clinton acknowledged Union County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit for the assistance in locating Shelton.

The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible, Clinton said.
