Staff members for the Gainesville-based district of the Georgia Department of Transportation plan to begin working out of a new office building on Jesse Jewell Parkway on or before the first of the year.
Office employees will occupy most of the first and all of the second floors of the three-story building near Community Way and the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center, according to a media release from the district.
"The relocation of the district staff will position the Northeast region’s headquarters closer to downtown Gainesville," District Engineer Brent Cook said. "We hope this will help encourage public involvement with citizens, enhance our ability to utilize technology, and respond to emergencies more efficiently by serving as the command center."
The offices are relocating from the familiar location on U.S. 129/Athens Hwy. at Ga. 323/Gillsville Hwy.
"The decision to move is a wise decision for several reasons, mainly because the current building was constructed in the early 1960s and renovations would be costly and slow," Cook said.
The current Athens Highway location will continue to house the district's maintenance buildings.
GDOT staff members will move and settle into the new offices through the end of the month with the goal of beginning service to the public there on or before January 1, according to the release.
