The Georgia State Patrol said a Lula man has been charged with driving under the influence and he hit a crossing guard at a Hall County elementary school.
Christopher Harris, 35, has been charged with DUI and failure to obey an authorized person directing traffic, according to a statement from troopers.
Harris reportedly ignored the request of the guard to stop and continued westward on Georgia 52 at the entrance of Wauka Mountain Elementary School, knocking the crossing guard to the ground.
The guard, Sammy Stephens, 70, of Clermont, suffered non-life threatening injuries. School officials said in an earlier update he had bruises and needed stitches. By mid-afternoon, he had been released from the hospital.
Troopers said Stephens was wearing reflective clothing equipped with lights.
Also Friday morning, shortly before the accident involving the crossing guard, a Hall County school bus was involved in an accident at another location.
Higgins says Bus 2415 and another vehicle collided about 7:00 on West Ridge Road near Marlow Drive. Twenty Chicopee Woods Elementary students were on the bus at the time of the accident, but there were no injuries, according to Higgins, who added a substitute bus was called to the scene and took the children on to school.
