Georgia Department of Transportation road crews are standing by, ready to tackle any hazardous road conditions should a winter storm materialize.
Spokeswoman Katie Strickland said beginning Thursday night, crew members were on a 12 hour shift.
"The impact of the weather system is yet to be seen," says Strickland. "But, crews and equipment will be deployed where they are most needed based on our weather conditions."
Strickland said crews can't be on every road at once, so they rely on citizens reports as well.
"Call 511 to report any icy conditions you see on interstates or state routes," said Strickland. "If possible, postpone your travel till daylight hours when road conditions are more visible."
Strickland added if and when crews do hit the roads, you need to practice safe driving and not follow too closely to a GDOT truck as it is spreading sand and gravel and do not pass a truck either.
Strickland said if you do go out on the roads while crews are out, practice safe driving habits. That includes not following a GDOT truck too closely as is spreads sand and gravel, or passing it before it treats the road ahead of you.
