Softball: Playoff roundup: Buford, Banks County, advance; East Hall, Stephens County, Jefferson split; Commerce falls

GAINESVILLE — East Hall earned a split with Bremen Wednesday in the second round of the Clas AAA girls state softball playoffs.

The Lady Vikings dropped the first game 8-7 and then sent the best-of-3 series to a deciding game three with a 7-4 win in Game 2.

Game three will be Thursday at East Hall Park.

In the first game, East Hall fell behind 8-0 in the first three innings but got a run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and four in the seventh but could not complete the rally.

In Game 2, Abigail Brown blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and propel the Lady Vikings to the win.

STEPHENS SPLITS WITH CHAPEL HILL

Region 5-AAAA champion Chapel Hill got a two-run home run off Emma Whitfield in the first inning en route to a 3-1 victory in the first game. The Lady Indians answered with a 5-3 victory in the second game to send it to Game 3 on Thursday.

In the first game Whitfield took the loss allowing three runs on three hits over six innings while fanning 10.

In Game 2, Stephens County took the early lead in the second on a Natalie Morgan double and Whitfield was able to make that standup.

Jasmine Lowery had three hits and Whitfield hit a solo home run for the Lady Indians.

Whitfield went the distance in game two scattering four hits and striking out nine in a complete-game effort.

BUFORD SWEEPS INTO ELITE 8

Buford outscored Miller Grove 32-1 in a two-game sweep in the Class AAAAA tournament to advance to the Elite 8.

The Lady Wolves won 13-0 and 19-1 in their best-of-3 series. They were one of three Region 8-AAAAA teams to advance to Columbus.

BANKS COUNTY SWEEPS CALLOWAY

Banks County dominated Calloway in the Class AA playoffs taking 3-1 and 8-0 victories to advance to the Class AA Elite 8.

JEFFERSON HEADED TO GAME 3

Region 8-AAA champion Jefferson will need to win on Thursday to advance to the Class AAAA Elite 8.

The Lady Dragons took game one over Northwest Whitfield 5-2 but not finish the sweep dropping game two 6-5 as the series will head to a deciding game three on Thursday.

COMMERCE FALLS IN CLASS A

Commerce, the fifth seed in the Class A Public playoffs, could not get past a Trion squad as the season ends for the Lady Tigers.

Trion, the 12th seed in the tournament, held off Commerce 5-4 in game on and then routed the Lady Tigers in game two, 14-6, to advance to Columbus.
