Banks County Sheriff’s Office accepting flags for retirement

HOMER – Was your flag ripped or torn during Tropical Storm Irma, or is it simply old and in need of retirement.

Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed has the answer to your problem. His office lobby now includes a U.S. flag disposal receptacle.

“The collection box is here in the front lobby at the sheriff’s office,” Speed says. “It’s available to anybody who wants to bring a worn or tattered flag that’s worn out or has lost its luster a little bit -- they can fold it and bring it here to the sheriff’s office. We will take care of it in getting it disposed of properly in the way that it needs to be disposed of.”

The National Association of Counties provides the collection box, and Speed says he got the idea from a woman at Northeast Georgia Bank.

Already, several flags have been deposited in the collection box.

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office is located at 160 Windmill Farm Road, Homer.
