Baldwin resident airlifted after suffering burns while smoking

BALDWIN — A Baldwin woman was airlifted for treatment Wednesday afternoon after smoking while on home oxygen.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. at a home on Wilbanks Street in Baldwin.

"The patient was airlifted to Grady for burns to the face and neck," said Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy on Thursday. "Subject was smoking while on oxygen, which ignited the oxygen. It burned the oxygen line to her face, and back to the unit, leaving spot fire on the wood floor."

The unnamed female victim initially was unable to escape the home.

"The house had smoke in it and she was still in the house," Roy said. "She was found in the bathroom and removed from the house."

The victim was treated by Habersham Emergency Medical Services personnel, then was flown by the Gainesville-based AirLife Georgia 2 helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
