CLARKESVILLE — A vehicle pursuit ended in a crash near downtown Clarkesville just before 9 p.m. Monday and left the driver facing 30 charges.
The one-vehicle crash occurred on Washington Street (Ga. 197) at Rocky Branch Road near The Charm House at 8:51 as the Georgia State Patrol pursued a Toyota RAV 4 driven by Kevin Stockton, 40, of Nicholson, said Cpl. Casey Coffee of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa.
As the vehicle entered the intersection of Washington Street and Rocky Branch Road, the driver lost control and the vehicle left the road, striking a crosswalk sign and an embankment before overturning and striking a tree, Coffee said.
Stockton, who received minor injuries in the crash, was arrested at the scene. He was transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment.
The pursuit began on Ga. 15 near Ga. 17 after Trooper 1st Class Galloway checked the vehicle for speeding and the vehicle also had a headlight out, Coffee said.
Stockton was charged by GSP with felony fleeing or attempting to elude police officer, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug-related objects, driving under the influence, obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers, speeding in excess of maximum limits, failure to maintain lane, following too closely, headlight requirements, tag light required, improper stopping on roadway, two counts of failure to signal lane change or turn, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of undivided street, aggressive driving, improper passing on hill/curve, passing in no-passing zone, five counts of failure to obey stop sign, too fast for conditions (prima facie speed), failure to obey signs or control devices, failure to maintain insurance, driving within a gore or median, driving while license suspended or revoked, and expired or no registration or title, Habersham County Detention Center records show.
