Special Weather Statement warns of potential winter weather

Weather officials are warning of potential winter weather late Friday night through early Saturday.

According to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service, a watch or warning has not been issued yet, however that may change as the weather moves closer to north and central parts of the state.

The current forecast calls for mostly snow possibly mixed with rain at the onset Friday. Currently, the greatest potential for accumulating snow is along and north of a Columbus to Macon to Augusta line.

A swath of heavier snow is currently forecast for the I-20 and I-85 corridor in west central Georgia extending northeast along the I-85 corridor through northeast Georgia. This includes the northeast Georgia mountains. Two to three inches and locally higher amounts are possible.

Forecasters believe the winter precipitation is expected to start across northwest Georgia on Friday afternoon, and continue to spread through the evening and Saturday.

High temperatures Saturday in our area are only expected to reach the mid-30's. That could make travel difficult Saturday in to Sunday, particularly in our area.

In our area, Hall, Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Forsyth, Gwinnett and Jackson counties could be impacted.

Nearby counties Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Pickens, Clarke and North Fulton could also see some weather.
