Community meeting scheduled Thursday for young women transitioning out of foster care

By AccessWDUN Staff

Northern Star Inc., a resource agency for young women transitioning from foster care to independent living, has a community meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Lumpkin County Parks & Recreation.

At the meeting, people will learn how they can assist young women who are moving out of foster care and into their own homes for the first time.

“We are asking the entire community to invest and make a difference in the lives of young ladies from Northeast Georgia aging out of foster care,” said Executive Director Mandy Williams. “There are so many ways the community can support Northern Star’s participants, from being a mentor family to partnering with us for career opportunities.”

Northern Star offers services to girls age 18-21 who have aged out of the foster-care system - and who have no other place to go. Many young women are forced out of state-sponsored group homes where they grew up, without any basic life skills such as shopping for groceries, caring for children, applying for college or jobs or paying bills. Northern Star helps provide those skills.

Northern Star serves 13 counties in northeast Georgia: Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White.
