Federal authorities are investigating after a construction worker was killed on the job at a park in Sugar Hill Tuesday afternoon.
The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 29-year-old William Jerry Davis of Gainesville.
Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge confirmed the incident happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday in an area where construction crews were doing some grading work near a football field at E.E. Robinson Park.
"Specially trained firefighters from the department's technical rescue team were called to the scene to perform a confined space rescue operation," Rutledge said in an email statement, noting that two workers had fallen into a manhole. Rutledge said a third worker had managed to get out of the manhole on his own.
Rescuers estimated the hole to be approximately 25-feet below ground.
"The two men were removed from the bottom of the manhole and were transported by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville," Rutledge said. "The first victim was removed at 1:47 p.m. and the second victim was removed by 2:03 p.m."
Eric Bailey with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Thursday morning that Davis later died at the hospital.
An obituary announcement for Davis indicated he worked for Simpson Trucking and Grading.
OSHA confirmed its investigation of the incident via email.
