ATWOOD, Tenn. - Derek Hagar raced to his seventh USCS Sprint Car Series victory of 2016 Saturday night, as he took the win at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, Tennessee.
The Marion, Arkansas driver battled for the lead with Jan Howard before taking the lead for good on lap 19 of the 25 lap feature.
Terry Gray finished in second, with Marshall Skinner in third, Brandon Hanks in fourth and Morgan Turpen in fifth.
Justin Webb, Jeff Willingham, Howard, Donny Goodwin and Ray Bugg rounded out the top ten.
Hagar took the lead at the start of the race followed by Howard, Skinner, Gray, and Turpin. Hanks passed Turpen for the fifth spot on the second lap, and then went after Skinner to challenge for the fourth position. The only caution flag of the race slowed the field on lap four when Wesley Shepherd stalled out.
When the green flag came out for the restart, drivers battled for position throughout the field, as Howard got by Hagar to take the lead, and Hanks made the pass on Skinner for the fourth spot. Skinner was able to come back and reclaim fourth on lap seven.
The top six settled into a race pace until lap 19, when Howard had a slowly deflating tire and gave up the lead to Hagar. Gray tried to close on Hagar to challenge for the lead in the closing laps, but it was Hagar moving away to take the win.
In preliminary action, Skinner won the six-lap Hoosier Tire Speed Dash, while Hagar and Gray scored heat race wins.
The next three events for the USCS Sprint Car Series takes place during a busy Labor Day holiday weekend. The first race will be at Georgia’s Lavonia Speedway on Friday night, September 2. Race two will be at South Carolina’s Laurens Speedway on Saturday night, September 3. The weekend finale will be on Monday night, September 5 at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, North Carolina.
