Unemployment insurance claims soar in Georgia

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Georgia soared in July, with most metropolitan areas, including Gainesville, recording double-digit increases.

Statewide, applications increased 30.6 percent compared to the numbers for June, led by Rome which had an increase of 94.6 percent.

Locally, the increase was 39.3 percent in Gainesville, 13.5 percent in Atlanta and 2.5 percent in Athens, the smallest jump among the 14 metro areas.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said most of the increases came in manufacturing and administrative and support services, which includes temporary staffing agencies. Thirty-eight percent of the claims filed were due to temporary layoffs.

Only Albany (3.8 percent) and Savannah showed (17.5 percent) showed declines.
