Gainesville City Schools showing support for childhood cancer awareness

By AccessWDUN staff
The Gainesville City School System will show its support for its students and families who face the challenges that come with living with cancer as each of its schools  participate in a coin drive through COINS4CURE.com.  It will take place next month as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately one-fourth of them will not survive the disease. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to emphasize the types of cancer that affect children, survivorship issues, and to help raise money for research.

All money collected will go towards funding more research to help find a cure for childhood cancer. As part of the campaign, students will also be participating in Gainesville's first ever "Gold Out" on Friday, September 2 at the GHS varsity football game at Bobby Gruhn Field. The school system is encouraging fans to "wear gold" that night to show their support for the campaign.

School officials add that during September, special tributes will be made to families, friends, professionals, and communities that come together and support children fighting cancer as well as to those families who need help during their time of loss.
