Rain postpones NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol to Sunday

After trying for several hours to get the event in, NASCAR announced that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway has been postponed to Sunday at 1 pm.

Spotty rain showers moved through the Bristol, Tennessee area throughout Saturday.  After a delay in getting the race started due to lightning in the area, the race finally went green around 9 pm.  But just 32 laps into the 500 lap event, the skies opened up again, leading NASCAR officials to red flag the race on lap 38.

The rain lifted after a red flag condition of one hour and 24 minutes, the track was dry and the cars rolled agian.  But just 10 caution laps later, the skies opened again, spilling a deluge of rain onto the track and again bringing out the red flag.

Just before 11:30 pm, NASCAR made the announcement that the race would be postponed to Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.

Kyle Busch was the leader when the rains came, with Dawsonville, Georgia's Chase Elliott in second.  Elliott had charged to the lead early on, but was passed for the top spot shortly before the rains came.

Fellow rookie Ryan Blaney is in third, with Denny Hamlin in fourth and Matt Kenseth in fifth.

Martin Truex, Jr., polesitter Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, defending race winner Joey Logano and Kyle Larson rounds out the top ten.

Once the race gets back underway Sunday afternoon, WDUN will have live PRN Radio coverage of the event on 102.9 FM and AM 550, as well as streaming online.  Television coverage will be moved to CNBC.
