Police: Fraud suspects used movie set money at Buford Walmart

Gwinnett County Police are asking for the public's help identifying two suspects accused of using fake $100 bills from a movie set to purchase — and then subsequently return for a refund — lawn equipment from two Buford Walmart locations.

A male suspect (see picture) used approximately $1,000 in fake bills at the Walmart on Sardis Church Road on July 19 between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.

The female suspect then went to the Walmart on Ga. 20 near I-985 to return some of the merchandise later that day.

Also at issue is the cashier who initially accepted the fake bills; she reportedly quit her job upon questioning from her supervisor, who first reported the alleged fraud to police.

"I'm not saying (the cashier) is a suspect, but I'm not saying she's not a suspect," said Cpl. Michele Pihera, Gwinnett Police spokeswoman, in a phone interview, adding that police want to hear the at-large suspects' version of events before potentially pressing charges.

It is unknown where exactly the fake money came from, though Pihera said the bills, while very convincing at first glance, were clearly marked with "for motion picture use only."

"I watched the surveillance footage of the transaction between the male making the purchases and the cashier doing the tender, and she proceeds to accept the bills. She takes out a pen to check their validity — to make sure they aren't fraudulent — and she still accepts them," said Pihera.

She said businesses should be vigilant when it comes to money and potential fraud, using security pens or checking bills for the proper water marks, among other methods of checking for validity.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwinnett Police, or — should they want to remain anonymous — Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-TIPS.
