Father of missing Hall County girl faces charges

The father of a missing Hall County girl was arrested Sunday on numerous warrants, including charges of child molestation.

According to a release from the Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam, Steven Keith Spires, 31, is in the Spalding County Jail with no bond and faces charges of child molestation, aggravated child molestation, statutory rape, sexual battery, sodomy and incest.

A representative from the Spalding County Sheriff's Office was not immediately available for comment or clarification on the charges.

Spires and his girlfriend, Carmen Clay, 19, were taken in to custody after a brief stand off at a hotel in McDonough Sunday. Spires' 12-year-old daughter had been traveling with him.

Beam stated in the release that Spires initially refused to exit a room at the Scottish Inn and surrender at 2:30 a.m., however eventually he did surrender to authorities without incident.

Clay also faces a charge of interference of custody in Spalding County. Beam said in the release it is possible she will face additional charges in Hall County.

Spires' daughter was taken into custody and turned over to the state DFACS. The child was the subject of an Amber Alert late last month.
