Lula voters will get to decide whether to allow alcohol by the drink

The Lula City Council will allow city voters to decide Nov. 8 whether they want pouring of alcohol at businesses in the city.

During a called meeting Wednesday morning, the council adopted a resolution calling for a referendum on sales of distilled spirits by the drink for consumption on premises.

The question to be presented would be worded, "Shall the governing authority of the City of Lula be authorized to issue licenses to sell distilled spirits for beverage purposes by the drink, such sales to be for consumption only on the premises?"

Councilman Mordecai Wilson made the motion to place the issue on the ballot, with Councilman Garnett Smith seconding. Four council members voted in favor, with Councilman Lamb Griffin abstaining from the vote.

Council members clarified that pouring of beer and wine would be included in the distilled spirits pouring issue.

The council voted 5-0 not to place Sunday sales of alcohol on the ballot.
