AUDIO: NGMC becomes first Georgia hospital to install dissolving heart stent

By AccessWDUN Staff

Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville once again is on the forefront of innovative heart procedures. This week, Dr. Chris Leach, an interventional cardiologist with The Heart Center of NGMC, implanted  the world’s first FDA-approved dissolvable heart stent, called the Absorb. The stent opens clogged arteries to restore blood flow and then dissolves in the body.

The stent, made by Abbott, is a major advance in the treatment of coronary artery disease – which usually results in blocked arteries, restricted blood flow and increased risk of heart attack, according to the hospital.

By the way, NGMC is the first and only hospital in the state – and the third in the Southeastern U.S. – to offer patients this option.

Dr. Leach talked Wednesday with AccessWDUN's Russell Brown about how the Absorb stent will advance treatment of coronary artery disease. Listen to the full interview here.
